Michigan Fall Travel

fall colorsMichiganders are lucky because fall is an incredible season with vivid autumnal colors to appreciate for months. Fall starts early in the Upper Peninsula where thousands of acres in national and state forests create a colorful pallet of reds, yellows, rusts, oranges, and greens. The Mackinac Bridge, which connects the two peninsulas, is a demarcation line for the seasons. Travelling Michiganders and visitors to Michigan should plan their fall vacations for mid to late September and early October in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan is famous its professional teams: Detroit Lions; Detroit Pistons; Detroit Red Wings; and Detroit Tigers—not to mention the semi-pro teams in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Midland, and Traverse City. Plan a trip to Detroit to watch a game and take in a Detroit casino, some of the areas great restaurants, and The Henry Ford—all in a two- or three-day weekend—no matter what season. Comerica Park home of the Tigers and Ford Field where the Lions play are state of the art sports fields and lots of fun. Pistons games are always fast moving and filled with excitement for every fan. The Redwings, which are always competitive in the NHL, are the reason for calling Detroit “Hockeytown USA”. Watching the Beach Bums, who play in Traverse City, enriches any northern Michigan summer vacation. Like the Beach Bums, the White Caps  in Grand Rapids and the Lug Nuts  in Lansing have great stadiums near great restaurants and other sites to make Michigan a pro-sports destination.

ResortNorth.com's Featured Conference Centers

Michigan has many interesting conference centers at its famous resorts which have lots of amenities, including spas, golf, restaurants, and other recreational facilities—even gaming. The metropolitan corridor between Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Lansing has excellent conference centers like the Troy/Detroit Marriot that are all near expressways and air transportation. However, for conference planners, who want a unique setting with all the amenities, should look around the beautiful peninsulas of Michigan.

Treetops Resort, which is a few miles northwest of Gaylord, has space for conferences of every size and great food for the meals and breaks. Its onsite lodging is recognized as some of the best lodging in northern Michigan. When the meetings are over, Treetops has some excellent, championship golfing in the warm months and skiing from late November through March. For those conference goers, who would rather stay inside there is a swimming pool and exercise rooms. Other interesting northern Michigan conference centers have spas and gaming as well as other interesting entertainments.

Plan a conference at the Homestead Resort or any other facility around Traverse City and Leelanau County to take advantage of the Sleeping Bear Dunes and local wineries for recreation after the meetings. Remember interesting casinos with gaming opportunities are near most of the resorts and conference centers in northern Michigan.

Even Mackinac Island with its Grand Hotel is a fabulous conference location. Once the conference participants cross the Straits of Mackinac on a Sheppler’s ferry, they forget their cares and concentrate on the conference and the Island. When the meetings are over for the day, the conference attendees can enjoy the many historic sites, shops, and restaurants on the island. There is golfing available, but many visitors to Mackinac Island prefer to spend their leisure time biking or taking a carriage ride around the island—or just quietly beachcombing.

Bay Mills Casino Resort in the Upper Peninsula is west of Sault Ste. Marie and has an interesting conference center located at its Casino with lodging in the same building. It has good service as well as good food for the hungry conference attendees. In addition to gaming, when the meetings are over, conference participants can play golf or just enjoy the natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior. Bay Mills is close enough to the Sault to go visit the locks or to Paradise to visit the lighthouse.

Frankenmuth is also a great Michigan conference venue with its excellent lodging, dining, shopping, and golfing.

Some visitors to this site might be interested in planning conferences in other states such as Illinois which has some great conference hotels around Chicago or in remote Galena, for instance. In Pennsylvania, there are great places for conferences near Pittsburgh and Philadelphia as well as in Amish Country around Lancaster and in the Pocono Mountains.
